Kidney Cancer Survival rate

Survival rates for kidney cancer by TNM stage

Some people with cancer may want to know the survival rates for their type of cancer. Others may not find the numbers helpful, or may even not want to know them. If you decide that you don’t want to know them, stop reading here and skip to the next section.

The 5-year survival rate refers to the percentage of patients who live at least 5 years after their cancer is found. Keep in mind that many of these patients live much longer than 5 years after their cancer is found and treated. And survival rates are based on patients whose cancer was found and treated more than 5 years ago. Better treatments now may mean that patients have a better outlook.

The numbers below come from the National Cancer Data Base and are based on patients whose cancer was found in the years 2001 and 2002. These are observedsurvival rates. They include people with kidney cancer who may have later died from other causes, such as heart disease. People with kidney cancer tend to be older and may have other serious health conditions. Therefore, the percentage of people surviving the cancer itself is likely to be higher.

While these numbers give an overall picture, every person is different. Statistics can’t predict what will happen in your case. Talk with your cancer care team if you have questions about your own chances of a cure, or how long you might survive your cancer. They know your situation best.

Survival rates in the UCLA Integrated Staging System

Researchers at UCLA have published a study evaluating their system in patients treated there from 1989 to 2005, looking at survival rates of the low-, intermediate- and high-risk groups. All of these patients at least had surgery to remove the tumor in the kidney. These numbers are disease-specific-survival rates, meaning they only take into account people who died from their kidney cancer (and not other causes).

For patients with localized kidney cancer (cancer that had not spread to the lymph nodes or distant organs), 5-year survival rates were 97% for the low-risk group, 81% for intermediate-risk group, and 62% for the high-risk group.

For patients with kidney cancer that had spread to the lymph nodes or distant organs when it was first found, 5-year survival rates were 41% for the low-risk group, 18% for intermediate-risk group, and 8% for the high-risk group.

Together, you and your treatment team will discuss your kidney cancer treatment options. The best approach for you may depend on a number of factors, including your general health, the kind of kidney cancer you have, whether the cancer has spread and your preferences for treatment.

Active surveillance

In some cases, especially when the cancer is small and slow-growing, the doctor may recommend that the patient is monitored closely and wait to start active treatment until there is evidence that the disease is worsening. This approach is called active surveillance, watchful waiting, or watch-and-wait. 

Surgery

Surgery is the initial treatment for the majority of kidney cancers. Surgical procedures used to treat kidney cancer include:

Radical nephrectomy. Surgery to remove the tumor, the entire kidney, and surrounding tissue is called a radical nephrectomy. If nearby tissue and surrounding lymph nodes are also affected by the disease, a radical nephrectomy and lymph node dissection is performed. During a lymph node dissection, the lymph nodes affected by the cancer are removed. If the cancer has spread to the adrenal gland or nearby blood vessels, the surgeon may remove the adrenal gland during a procedure called an adrenalectomy and parts of the blood vessels.

Partial nephrectomy. A partial nephrectomy is the surgical removal of a tumor while preserving kidney function and lowering the risk of kidney disease after surgery, called hyperfiltration injury. It is used most often for a small tumor, even when the other kidney is functioning normally.

Kidney cancer, or cancer of the kidney, is any type of cancer that has arisen from the kidney. Kidney cancer does not usually include a cancer that arose outside the kidney and metastasized to include metastatic cancer of the kidney. 

The most common types of kidney cancer include renal cell carcinoma and urothelial cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. Renal cell carcinoma accounts for approximately 90% of all kidney cancers. Urothelial cell carcinoma is a type of cancer that occurs in the urinary system, specifically the kidney, urinary bladder, ureter, urethra and urachus.

The following are also types of kidney cancers:

  1. Juxtaglomerular cell tumor (reninoma)
  2. Angiomyolipoma
  3. Renal oncocytoma
  4. Bellini duct carcinoma
  5. Clear-cell sarcoma 
  6. Squamous cell carcinoma
  7. of the kidney
  8. Mesoblastic nephroma
  9. Wilms' tumor (usually diagnosed in children under 5)
  10. Mixed epithelial stromal tumor
On very rare occasions these cancers and potentially cancerous tumors that usually originate in other parts of the body, can start off in the kidneys: clear cell adenocarcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, inverted papilloma, renallymphoma, teratoma, carcinosarcoma, carcinoid tumor of the renal pelvis. 

Kidney cancers originate mainly in two parts of the kidney - the renal tubule and the renal pelvis. Most that originate in the renal tubule are renal cell carcinoma and clear cell adenocarcinoma. Most cancers that originate in the renal pelvis are transitional cell carcinoma. 

3% of all adult cancers in the Western Europe are kidney cancers. There were 5,745 diagnosed cases of kidney cancer in England and Wales in 2004. In the USA there are over 50,000 newly diagnosed cases of kidney cancer each year, causing over 13,000 deaths annually. Worldwide, approximately 208,000 cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed annually, accounting for nearly 2% of all cancers. Regions in Asia and Africa have the lowest rates of kidney cancer worldwide, while North America has the highest rate. 

In the UK kidney cancer is the eighth most common form of cancer in adult men and the fourteenth most common in adult women. 

Adults aged between 50 and 80 years are more likely to develop kidney cancer compared to other people. This type of cancer affects men more than women. 

The incidence of kidney cancer in the developed world has been steadily increasing over the last three decades. Some experts believe there is a close link between this increase and a parallel rise in rates of adult obesity.
